Ada Covell

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Ada Covell, who at 91, was our oldest serving volunteer. She will be greatly missed - despite her age no-one else in the organisation could walk as fast as she could. We extend our sympathies to the family.

SECOND SHOP FOR TREE OF LIFE CENTRE

We are delighted to say that thanks to support from The Big Lottery we have now opened a second community shop in the former Greenbrow Primary School in Newall Green. Our opening hours are Mon-Thurs from 10.00-3.00pm and you are welcome to come and look at our plans. We need to do some repairs to the school before we can fully open - roof and windows - to remedy the decay and vandal damage but when we have we will have a HUGE centre to offer to the local community. Pop in and have a cup of tea/coffee and find a bargain at the same time.

Bridgewater Hall Concerts here again!!

The concerts delivered by the artists from Bridgewater Hall have been very popular in the past few years. In fact, so popular, that they will be holding FOUR, yes FOUR this year on Tuesday 14th, 21st and 28th September and Tuesday, 6th Ocober. Caring with Confidence - to help you care for someone

We have been asked to run again our very successful Caring with Confidence course that carers found so successful. Comments like -"it really helped me to be sure that what I was doing was the best thing" and " it made such a difference to me" plus the training to help you manage your caring role better made us want to help more people.

Caring for someone you love for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week can be really stressful and only those who have been there know just how stressful it is. So if you think this course might help you it runs for 7 weeks on Friday mornings from 10.30am-12.30pm followed by lunch together and starts on 14th May. Just ring us if you would like to come.

Our last cookery course was so successful we are going to repeat it. It will be on Tuesdays from 3.00-4.00pm and will cost £2.00 and will last for 10 weeks beginning mid-September.

You will learn how to grow your own herbs, cook simple meals, know what is really in the packet or tin and how to eat well and maintain your weight without it costing the earth.

that the Big Lottery Fund is so impressed with our work they have authorised a grant of £259,377 over three years to help us to establish another furniture shop. This means we can help even more people in need and divert lots more furniture away from landfill. We can't thank them enough - all we have to do now is find suitable premises.

Olde Time Music Hall

It is not often that we get a string quartet from Bridgewater Hall but we were very pleased to welcome them on 25 June. They played a great selection of music and soon had us tapping our feet and clapping along with them. They played showtunes, marches and music to dream by. We are hoping to repeat this again either in October 2008 or maybe next year so watch this space.

A dress down Friday by the IT Department of Transform, based in Sharston, resulted in them given us their proceeds for the day. Apparently, a good time was had by all and, even better, they helped their local community. Their managing director agreed to double the amount raised so we are really grateful for that. When John Lewis were upgrading their perfume and jewellery counters, instead of just throwning them away we were contacted to see if we could use any of their stands. We were so pleased to have them - everyone who has come into our shop has been amazed and have commented how "posh" we are now. They have enabled us to display our goods far better and we are really grateful that they thought of us.

African Drumming

It is with sadness that we announce the death of James Brown who led our drumming group. James went to Africa just before Christmas but caught malaria and although through his ethical beliefs he treated it with herbal remedies he was taken on a 15 hour journey to the nearest hospital where he sadly died. At just 28, James was an inspiration to many and his enthusiasm for the drums will be very much missed here. His funeral will be in Birmingham on 14 March but his friends are trying to organise a memorial service to him here in Manchester in the near future,please continue to check our website for more information.

As a token our our respect, the drumming group will close until further notice.

Well, Jeremy and I got our suits out and went down to London to the Savoy Hotel. We were invited as part of the Cheshire Furniture Re-use Forum who were nominiated for the best Community Recycling Initiative - and we won!! We were really pleased to have the work recognised as the Forum has increased the tonnage of re-used furniture by 90% and helped over 10,000 people. We are pleased to have played our part in avoiding goods going to lanfill and can't wait until next year to see if we win again!

If you have seen the previous photos of the FUN DAY then you can see what a great time we have. This year our fun day is from 11:00am-3.00pm (with our AGM at 10.30)and this year it will be bigger than ever. With a grant from Co-op community fund, all visitors will receive a free piece of fruit to help them to their "5 a day". With children's entertainer, story telling, bouncy castle etc for the children and book stalls, tombola, Tai Chi, and West African Drumming to entertain the adults there is plenty to do and watch. And with the cafe serving delicious, tasty soup, sandwiches and cream teas there will be plenty to ensure you have a great day.

Currently our menu is is made up from: Starters (all 75p) Soup of the Day, Prawn Salad, Peppercorn mushrooms etc. Main courses (£2.25) Stew and Dumplings, Roast Dinner, Steak and Ale Pie, Cottage Pie, Lasagne. Desserts (75p) Fresh Fruit Salad, Trifle, Apple Pie. Main meals served from 12-2pm. We still serve tea (30p), coffee (35p), toast (20p) and toasted teacakes (30p) from 10-12 and then again from 2-3. Well, it was a cream tea celebration actually. Over 100 people came to celebrate our new car park and kitchen including The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Paul Goggins MP, John Moran from construction company Laing O'Rourke, local councillor Eddy Newman and representatives from Manchester Airport Trust Fund. We had a lovely afternoon so thanks to all who came (especially our drumming group who gave their best ever performance). Our painting class had displayed their work which was amazing after just two weeks and the gardeners had placed lots of lovely pots around the car park. A really good time celebrating with the local community a local amenity.

We have just 2 places left on the painting course and after seeing today what people who said "I can't do painting" have done I am really amazed. If you are thinking lack of talent is stopping you coming then make sure you come next Friday. You too will be amazed at what you can do.

I know its been a bit wintery lately but the gardening class is full of beans. There are 3 places left on this course and if you want either pots full of plants or hanging baskets to brighten up your home this summer then make sure you come along.

We are really pleased to announce that the Rt Hon Paul Goggins, MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East, will be formally opening our new car park and kitchen on FRIDAY, 7th APRIL at 3.00pm. One of Paul's responsibilites is working with the voluntary and community sector so we are really pleased he is able to come.

We will also be receiving a plaque from Laing, the construction company who gave us a new car park and who are building the new health centre at the Forum. We really appreciate their help and will display the plaque with pride.

Turn trash into cash

Manchester City Council asked "Who is your favourite charity in Manchester?" and we came 2nd in the whole city. Thanks to everyone who voted for us. We think we are pretty special and we're pleased to know that you do too!

We are having building works done until Christmas so PLEASE be careful walking round the building. There is now no entrance from/to the clothes shop from the furniture shop so please use both entrance from the car park. We are sorry for any inconvenience but when the work is finished we will soon be able to extend our cafe to offer lunches so............ watch this space.

Well why not come and see our stall in Wythenshawe Market on Tuesday 13th December for those last minute presents. Or maybe you need more glasses for partying over the Christmas period. Or you might want to book in for stress reducing complementary therapy.

Thanks to all who supported our stall on such a freezing day!! We had a lovely time and hope you got loads of bargains. Come and see us at our community shop. We are closing 3pm on 22nd and re-opening on 3rd January. See you then!!
